Robert Black is a bassist and professor at the Hartt School of Music. He performs as a solo bassist in diverse styles- jazz, orchestral, and classical music with an emphasis in new music. A tireless champion and promoter of new music, to date, he has commissioned works from more than 50 composers including John Cage, David Lang, Barry Truax, and James Sellars and has a special interest in working with young or emerging composers. Black performs with Bang on a Can All Stars (New York City’s hard hitting new music ensemble), Basso Bongo, with percussionist Amy Knowles, and the School of Hard Knocks (a post-modern dance company). In addition, he does collaborations with actors, movement-based improvisation with dancers, live action-painting performances with painters, and music with computers and MIDI. Black was chair of the 2001 International Society of Bassists (ISB) Composition Competition and joined the ISB Board of Directors in June 2001.
